After enduring Nairobi traffic for many years, I finally ditched public transport and driving in NBO … Unless absolutely necessary. In the quietude of December 2011, I rode around the traffic-less Nairobi to get a feel of the used mountain bike … had close shaves with impatient drivers on Kenyatta avenue on December 24th (“Drinks-cember”); a near accident with a lady Vitz driver exiting a compound going in the wrong direction.
The hard part was figuring out how to navigate the roundabouts. At first I went along the edge and stopped in the void zones, or pushed my bike with the pedestrians as they crossed. After a few weeks of observing the over confident Black Mamba riders have near misses with cars and motor cycles on the roundabouts, I gave it a go… not bad.
Got a few props for being a girl cyclist from motorists. 🙂
